In cricket, batting is the skill of hitting a ball.

A batter uses a bat to score runs. They must also protect their wicket to stay in the game. Two people are on the pitch at once. One is the striker who faces the ball. The other is the non-striker who stands nearby.

Batters must use smart plans and quick moves. They can hit the ball in any direction. Some use a vertical bat, which means the bat stays straight up and down. A drive is a common straight shot.

Other shots use a horizontal bat. This means the bat swings sideways.

To hit well, a batter needs a good stance. This is how they stand before the ball comes. They try to stay relaxed and balanced. They also use a backlift, which is lifting the bat to get ready.

Sometimes, a batter will choose to leave the ball. This means they let it pass without hitting it. They do this to stay safe and watch the pitch.
