Basil Zaharoff was one of the richest men in the world. He lived during a time of many wars and big changes. People called him a "mystery man" because he was so hard to know. Some people even called him a "merchant of death." This was because he made his money by selling weapons to many nations. He sold guns and tools to countries that were often fighting each other.

His career in selling arms began in the late 1870s. He was hired by an agent for the company Nordenfelt in 1877. After that, he worked for a famous firm called Vickers from 1897 to 1927. He helped sell many famous inventions like the Maxim machine gun. This gun was one of the first fully automatic weapons. He also helped market the very first working submarines.

Zaharoff was involved in many difficult and unfair business deals. He once sold a faulty submarine to the Greek government. This submarine used steam and was very hard to steer. He also tried to stop an inventor named Isaac Peral. Peral had built a much better submarine in Spain. Zaharoff did not want to buy it, so he used tricks to stop the Spanish government from using it. He wanted to sell his own weapons instead.
