Basil Zaharoff was a Greek arms dealer and industrialist. He became one of the wealthiest people in the world during his lifetime. Many people called him the "merchant of death." Others called him the "mystery man of Europe." This was because he was very secretive and highly successful. He built his massive fortune through aggressive and cunning business tactics.

Zaharoff's career was built on selling weapons to many different nations. He sold munitions to Great Britain, Germany, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire. He also sold to Greece, Spain, Japan, and the United States. He often sold arms to opposing sides during conflicts. This allowed him to profit regardless of who won a war. He also used the press to attack his business rivals. He maintained close ties with powerful political leaders to help his business. These leaders included British Prime Minister David Lloyd George and Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II.

His early life was marked by movement and change. He was born Zacharias Basileios Zacharoff in 1849 in the Ottoman Empire. His family had lived in Russia as exiles for over twenty years. They returned to the Ottoman Empire in 1855. Zaharoff held several different jobs before entering the arms trade. He worked as a tour guide in Constantinople. He also worked as a shipping agent in Ireland. Later, he worked as a salesman in the United States.

Zaharoff's most significant success came through marketing advanced military technology. He was a key salesman for the firm Vickers from 1897 to 1927. He helped market the Maxim gun, which was a fully automatic machine gun. This weapon was much more effective than older hand-cranked models. Zaharoff was involved in the intense competition between Maxim and the Nordenfelt company. He helped facilitate the 1888 merger that created the Maxim Nordenfelt Guns and Ammunition Company. This merger helped consolidate the market for automatic weapons.

Zaharoff was also deeply involved in the early development of submarines. He sold the Nordenfelt I, a steam-driven submarine, to the Greek government. This model was based on a design by George Garrett. However, the submarine was faulty and difficult to navigate. Zaharoff also persuaded the Turks and Russians to buy submarines. These vessels were often unstable and failed during sea trials. One Turkish submarine even sank during a torpedo test.

One of Zaharoff's most controversial actions involved the Spanish inventor Isaac Peral. Peral designed a much better submarine using electric propulsion. This submarine featured a periscope and a gyroscope for stability. Zaharoff wanted to control the market and tried to stop Peral's success. He attempted to buy Peral's patents but was rejected. Zaharoff then used social and political influence to undermine Peral. He used a relationship with Pilar de Muguiro y Beruete to gain access to Spanish elites. This helped him create a network that worked against Peral's invention.

Through these methods, Zaharoff successfully acquired the Spanish company Euskalduna. He renamed it Placencia de las Armas Co. Ltd. This company sold weapons to the Spanish government during the 1898 War. However, the company was accused of selling useless arms. These scandals led to many accusations of bribery and manipulation against Zaharoff. Despite the controversy, his influence in the arms industry remained vast. He showed how business, politics, and technology could intersect in powerful ways.
