To the east, it borders Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk Oblasts. The Udmurt Republic sits to the northwest. 
Water is a defining feature of the landscape. There are more than 13,000 rivers in the republic. Many of these rivers are part of a deep-water transportation system. This system provides access to the Baltic and Black seas. The Belaya River is the longest at 1,430 km. Other major rivers include the Ufa River and the Sakmara River. The republic also contains 2,700 lakes and reservoirs. 

The history of the land is very ancient. The first settlements date back to the early Paleolithic period. During the Bronze Age, the population increased significantly. People of the Abashevo culture lived here then. They were skilled at making bronze tools and weapons. In the 10th century, writers described the Bashkirs as an independent people. By the 14th century, the land was divided among different groups. These included the Kazan and Siberia Khanates. In 1554, the region became part of the Russian state. 
Political changes shaped the modern republic. Salawat Yulayev is a national hero from this history. He was a close aide to Pugachev during a rebellion. In 1917, the people held conventions called All-Bashkir Qoroltays. These meetings decided on national autonomy. On 20 March 1919, the Bashkir ASSR was formed. This was the first autonomous republic in the Russian SFSR. During the Soviet period, it held broad autonomous rights. In 1990, the republic adopted a declaration of state sovereignty. On 25 February 1992, it was renamed the Republic of Bashkortostan. 
The economy relies heavily on natural resources. The ground holds large oil reserves and natural gas. There is also coal and various metal ores. The republic is a major source for non-ferrous metallurgy. It has large deposits of lignite, which is a type of coal. 


Today, Bashkortostan functions as a sovereign state within Russia. The Constitution was adopted on 24 December 1993. It defines the republic as a full-fledged subject of the Russian Federation. The Head of the Republic leads the government. Radiy Khabirov has held this position since 2018. The parliament is called the State Assembly, or Kurultai. It consists of 110 deputies elected every five years.
