Geographically, Ufa is located at the confluence of the Belaya and Ufa rivers. This meeting of waters occurs on low hills. These hills form the Ufa Plateau. The plateau lies to the west of the southern Ural Mountains. The city is the tenth-most populous city in Russia. It also ranks as the fourth-most populous city in the Volga Federal District. The urban agglomeration includes up to 1.4 million residents.

The city's name and origins are subjects of much study. The name Ufa likely comes from the Ufa River. One linguist, Aleksandr Matveyev, suggests an Iranian origin. He believes the name comes from "ap," which means water. Other researchers, Karimov and Khabibov, propose a different history. They argue an ancient settlement called Ufa existed on a hilltop before 1574. They believe Turkic-speaking tribes lived there. These tribes may have performed rituals to the sky god, Tengri. They might have called the site "Upe" or "Ufe." This name refers to a place used for ritual sacrifice.

These researchers suggest the Russian builders used this existing name for their new settlement.

Official history began with the construction of a Russian fortress. This happened in 1574 by the order of Ivan the Terrible. The fortress was originally named Tura-Tau after the hill. Ufa was granted official town status in 1586. In 1865, it became the capital of the Ufa Governorate. This occurred when the governorate split from the Orenburg Governorate. The city's importance grew through the 19th and 20th centuries. The Belaya River Waterway opened in 1870. The Samara-Zlatoust Railroad arrived in 1890. These developments connected Ufa to the European part of the Russian Empire.
