This region is part of the Volga-Vyatka economic area. It lies mostly to the west of the mighty Volga River. The land is part of the Volga Upland. Many other places border it, such as the Mari El Republic to the north. It also sits near the Republic of Tatarstan to the east.

The landscape is filled with water and trees. There are more than two thousand rivers in the republic. The Volga, the Sura, and the Tsivil are the largest rivers. You can also find four hundred lakes across the land. Forests cover about 30% of the area. Most of these woods are in the south near the Sura River. The weather changes with the seasons in a moderately continental way. The ground holds many natural resources like clay, sand, and peat.

The Chuvash people call this land their homeland. Their history goes back many centuries to Turkic tribes. These ancestors were known as the Bulgars and the Suars. Long ago, some Bulgars moved to the Balkans to start a new state. Others stayed in the Middle Volga region. These people became the foundation of the Chuvash people. In the year 1552, local leaders swore loyalty to the Grand Duchy of Muscovy. Later, the region became a part of the Russian state.

Many people live in this densely populated region. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 1,251,619. The capital city is Cheboksary, which sits on the Volga River.

The Chuvash Republic, often called Chuvashia, is a republic located within the Russian Federation. It sits in Eastern Europe, specifically in the center of European Russia.

The region is a key part of the Volga-Vyatka economic region. Most of the territory lies to the west of the Volga River and within the Volga Upland. Chuvashia shares borders with several other regions. It borders the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast to the west and the Mari El Republic to the north. To the east and southeast lies the Republic of Tatarstan. To the southwest, it borders the Republic of Mordovia, and the Ulyanovsk Oblast sits to the south.

The geography of Chuvashia is defined by its many water sources and forests. There are over two thousand rivers throughout the republic. The most significant rivers are the Volga, the Sura, and the Tsivil. The Sura River flows toward the Volga along much of the western boundary. Additionally, the republic contains four hundred lakes. Some reservoirs of the Volga River valley are located in the northern part of the region. Forests cover approximately 30% of the land. These woodlands are mostly found in the south along the Sura River. The climate is described as moderately continental. This means temperatures change with the seasons, with averages varying between January and July. The land also holds many natural resources. These include gypsum, sand, clay, sapropel, phosphorite, and peat. While oil and natural gas deposits exist, they are not yet extracted for commercial use.

The history of the Chuvash people traces back to the 5th to 8th centuries. Their ancestors were Oghur Turkic tribes known as the Bulgars and the Suars. These groups originally lived in the Northern Caucasus. During the 7th and 8th centuries, some Bulgars migrated to the Balkans. There, they helped establish the state of modern Bulgaria. Another group moved to the Middle Volga Region. The Bulgars who did not adopt Islam became the foundation of the Chuvash people. During the Mongol invasion of Volga Bulgaria, the Suar people migrated north. They lived among Volga Finnic tribes like the Mari and Mordvins. The Chuvash people claim descent from these Suars who assimilated with the Mari. In 1242, the region became vassals of the Golden Horde. Later, in August 1552, Chuvash and Mari princes swore loyalty to the Grand Duchy of Muscovy. Between 1650 and 1850, Russian Orthodox missionaries worked to convert the population. These missionaries even created a written version of the Chuvash language.

Politically, Chuvashia has undergone many changes. In 1917, the Chuvash joined the Idel-Ural Movement. By December of that year, they joined the short-lived Idel-Ural State. After the Russian Civil War, the Bolsheviks gained victory. To gain local support, Lenin ordered the creation of a Chuvash state within the Russian SFSR. The Chuvash Autonomous Oblast was formed on 24 June 1920. This later became the Chuvash ASSR in April 1925. Until 2012, the republic officially held the status of a state. Today, the State Council serves as the regional legislative body. The highest executive body is the Republic's Government. This government manages various district administrations and commissions to run daily matters.

One unique aspect of the region involves genetics. Osteopetrosis is a condition that affects a small number of newborns worldwide. Globally, it affects 1 in every 20,000 to 250,000 births. However, the odds are much higher in Chuvashia. In this region, the rate is about 1 in every 3,500 to 4,000 newborns. This is due to specific genetic traits of the Chuvash people. Education is also a major part of life in the republic. There are five higher educational institutions in Cheboksary. These include the Chuvash State University and the Chuvash State Pedagogical University. Approximately 45,000 students attend these universities and various technical schools. This creates a large community of learners within the republic.
