Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia, is a nation in the Baltic region of northern Europe.

The population of Latvia is approximately 1.83 million people. The titular nation is made up of Latvians, who comprise 65.5% of the people. Latvians belong to the ethnolinguistic group known as the Balts. They speak the Latvian language. Russians form the most prominent minority group. They make up almost a quarter of the total population. Specifically, 37.7% of the population speaks Russian as their native tongue. This diversity is partly due to extensive immigration during the Soviet occupation period.
Latvia's origins trace back to roughly 3000 BC. At this time, Proto-Baltic ancestors settled on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.
The medieval period brought significant political and religious changes. In the 12th century, the territory became more integrated into European systems. Missionaries traveled up the Daugava River to seek converts to Christianity. In the 13th century, German crusaders arrived in large numbers. They conquered many areas to form a crusader state called Terra Mariana, or Livonia.
For several centuries, different powers competed for control of the land. Following the Livonian War, the region fell under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
By 1795, all of modern Latvia had been incorporated into the Russian Empire. This occurred after the Third Partition of Poland annexed the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. The 19th century saw a major economic and social boom. Ports expanded, railways were built, and new factories appeared. Riga grew into the largest port in the Russian Empire. This era also saw the rise of the "First National Awakening." This movement increased the use of the Latvian language in literature and society. It laid the groundwork for modern nationalism.
Latvia achieved its first independence on 18 November 1918. This happened after the Russian Empire collapsed following World War I.

The path to modern freedom was the peaceful Singing Revolution. This movement started in 1987 among the Baltic Soviet republics. It led to the restoration of official independence on 21 August 1991.
