This refers to the flat topography of the Warta River basin where they lived. In 966, the Polan ruler Mieszko I converted to Christianity. This event helped establish the foundations of the Polish state. By 1025, the Kingdom of Poland emerged under Bolesław I the Brave.

Poland experienced a period of great power known as the Golden Age. In 1569, the country joined with Lithuania to form the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. However, this prosperity ended when neighboring states partitioned the country at the end of the 18th century. Poland regained its independence in 1918 after World War I, but faced further devastation during World War II.

Following the Cold War, Poland underwent a major political transformation. The Solidarity movement helped dissolve the communist government during the 1980s. In 1989, Poland re-established itself as a liberal democracy. Today, it is a parliamentary republic with a bicameral legislature. This legislature consists of two houses: the Sejm and the Senate. As a developed market and high-income economy, Poland is considered a regional power. It currently holds the position of the 20th largest economy in the world by nominal GDP.
