A bank vault is a very secure room.

Banks use these rooms to protect cash and important papers. Many other places use them too. You might find vaults in post offices or grand hotels. They are also used in libraries for rare books. Some government offices keep their valuables in vaults as well. These rooms are built to be a part of the building itself.

Making a vault is a careful process. Builders use special concrete to make the walls. This concrete is much different from the kind used for houses. It has zero slump, which means it is very thick. Workers mix in metal shavings or other materials to stop drills. They place steel rods into the wet mix by hand. Then, they vibrate the molds to remove air pockets. The concrete sets very fast in only six to twelve hours.

Vault technology has changed a lot over time. In the past, vaults were incredibly heavy. Some of these old vaults weighed hundreds of tons. They had walls that were at least one foot thick. The doors were often three and a half feet thick. Today, vaults use thinner and lighter materials. Modern panels use a special blend of concrete for strength. A small three-inch panel can be ten times stronger than an eighteen-inch regular panel.

Locking a vault is a complex job. The door uses many massive metal bolts to stay shut. Most locks are mounted on the inside of the door. This makes them very hard to reach from the outside. Some vaults use a combination lock with two dials. Two people must work together to open these locks. Other vaults use a time lock, which is a special clock. This clock prevents the door from opening until a certain time passes.

Vault makers and robbers are in a constant race. As robbers find new ways in, makers find new ways to stop them. Some old vaults were so strong they were hard to destroy. Two Mosler vaults even survived an atomic blast in Hiroshima.

Modern vaults now use high-tech tools for safety. They may have cameras or listening devices to detect trouble. Alarms can also alert the police if someone touches the lock.
