You can find them in many public places. They are common in schools, workplaces, and transport hubs. People use them for short or long periods of time. They help individuals store clothing or other personal items privately. These storage spaces are very important for staying organized in busy areas.

Most lockers are built in banks, which means they sit side by side. Many are made from painted sheet metal like steel. To save space, lockers in a bank often share side walls. They are put together by adding a floor, roof, and door to a new unit. The walls and roofs are often joined by riveting or welding. To keep the inside clean, doors have vents for air to flow. These vents might be small holes or angled slats.

Lockers have changed quite a bit over time. The earliest modern lockers were simple boxes with locks. They were likely used for sports to keep equipment safe. Athletes used them in locker rooms to store their gear. Later, they began appearing in hospitals, gyms, and schools. Some were made of wood, but many moved to steel. Today, we even see smart lockers that use digital technology.

Lockers come in many specific sizes and types. A standard locker cabinet is often 6 feet tall. They can have different tiers, which are layers stacked on top of each other. A single-tier locker is full height, while a two-tier locker is about 3 feet tall. Some lockers are 12 or 15 inches wide. Most are about 18 inches deep. Some even have sloping tops to stop dust from building up.

There are many ways to secure a locker. You might use a traditional key or a padlock. Some people use a latchlock or a coin deposit system. Modern designs use electronic keypads for passwords. There are also smart lockers controlled by a mobile phone app. Some high-security models use three-point locking to secure the top and bottom. This keeps your belongings very safe from being forced open.
