Banks accept deposits, which means people give them money to hold safely. The bank can then make loans to others who need money for things.

This helps the economy of a country stay stable. Because banks are so important, most countries have strict rules to watch them. These rules help make sure banks always have enough cash to pay people back.

Banks work using a system called fractional-reserve banking. In this system, banks do not keep all the money in their vaults at once. Instead, they hold only a portion of their current liabilities as liquid assets. These assets are things that can be quickly turned into cash. Banks also follow international standards called the Basel Accords to keep enough capital.

They can get these reserves by taking new deposits or borrowing from other banks. This allows them to lend money to many different customers.

Banking has a very long and interesting history. Some people believe banking started as early as the 4th millennium BCE. In the 12th century, the Knights Templar provided safe services for pilgrims. They gave travelers receipts so they did not have to carry heavy gold.

Modern banking grew in Renaissance Italy during the 14th century. Famous families like the Medici ran very powerful banks. Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici started the Medici Bank in 1397. Other old banks still exist today, like Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472.

There are many ways to use a bank today. You can visit a physical branch to talk to a person.

You can also use an Automated Teller Machine, or ATM, to get cash. Many people use online banking or mobile banking on their phones. Some even use video banking to talk to a banker on a screen. Banks also provide cards like debit and credit cards for easy payments. These tools make it simple to buy things without using paper money.

Banks make money in a few different ways. Most of their profit comes from interest. Interest is a fee that people pay when they borrow money.
