In the 1200s, German knights arrived in Estonia and Latvia. These knights were part of the Livonian Crusade. They brought a new religion called Christianity to the region. They also helped build large trading cities like Tallinn and Riga. These cities became very important for trading goods like timber and wax.

Lithuania followed a very different path from its neighbors. Because it was further inland, it was harder for sea-based knights to reach. This allowed the Lithuanian tribes to stay more independent. In 1253, a leader named Mindaugas became their king. Lithuania grew into a huge state called the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It eventually became one of the largest countries in medieval Europe. Later, Lithuania joined with Poland to form a powerful union.

History was not always easy for these three nations. After many years of different rulers, they all became part of the Russian Empire. After World War I ended, they became independent countries again.
