The baiji was a unique river dolphin from China. It lived in the Yangtze River system.

People called it the "white-flag" dolphin. This name came from its low, triangular fin. The fin looked like a light-colored flag in the murky water. Some people even called it the "Goddess of the Yangtze." They believed it was a symbol of peace and prosperity. It was a very special animal found nowhere else on Earth.

This dolphin had a very interesting way of seeing the world. Its eyes were much smaller than those of dolphins in the ocean. Because the river water was often cloudy, the baiji used sonar to navigate. Sonar is a way of using sound to find things. The dolphin sends out quick clicks of sound. These sounds bounce off objects and come back to the dolphin. This helped them find food and stay with their group.

Scientists have studied the baiji to understand its history. They found that the baiji split from other dolphin ancestors about 16 million years ago. This happened during a time called the Miocene. The baiji is not closely related to any dolphins living today. It was one of only five dolphin species to live only in fresh water. Its closest known relative was a dolphin from the coast of North America.

Sadly, the baiji population began to drop very quickly. In the 1950s, there were about 6,000 of these dolphins. By 1970, only a few hundred remained. In 1997, a search found only 13 dolphins.

Many things caused this decline. As China grew, the river became very busy. Dolphins were caught in fishing gear or hit by large boats. They also faced pollution and changes to the river from power plants.

Today, many experts believe the baiji is functionally extinct. This means there are likely no longer enough left to survive. It has not been seen in over 20 years. The last known living baiji was a dolphin named Qi Qi, who died in 2002. The loss of the baiji is a big deal for science. It was the first time a well-studied dolphin species was lost due to human influence. We can learn much from its story about protecting our rivers.
