Many people call them the boto or the pink river dolphin. They live in South America in places like the Amazon basin.

These dolphins are the largest species of river dolphin in the world. They are very important to the rivers where they live. They act as apex predators, which means they are at the top of the food chain.

These animals have amazing ways to move and find food. They have a melon on their head to use biosonar. This is a way of using sound to see things underwater. Their teeth are heterodont, which means the teeth have different shapes. Some teeth are for grabbing and others are for crushing.

They use large pectoral fins to swim through flooded forests. Their neck bones are not fused, so they can turn their heads 90 degrees. This helps them navigate through trees and plants easily.

Scientists have studied these dolphins for a long time. Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville first described the species in 1817.

There is a lot of debate about how they are classified. For a long time, they belonged to the superfamily Platanistoidea. Now, they are part of the superfamily Inioidea. Scientists also study if the Bolivian or Orinoco dolphins are different species. Some research suggests they are just subspecies of the main dolphin.

There are many interesting facts about their bodies and lives. Adult males are often pink, but females are usually less pink. This difference in size and color is called sexual dimorphism.

Males can be 16% longer and weigh 55% more than females. They eat up to 53 different kinds of fish, like piranhas and catfish.

They also eat river turtles, crabs, and frogs. In the wild, they usually live in small groups of about three.

It is important to know that these dolphins face many hard jobs. In 2018, the IUCN named them as an endangered species.

They face threats from pollution and from being caught in fishing lines. Habitat loss is also a big problem for them. Some dolphins have lived in zoos, like one named Baby.
