The beluga whale is a special animal from the Arctic.

It belongs to the family Monodontidae. This family includes the narwhal as its only other living member. People often call the beluga the "white whale." This name comes from its bright skin. It is also called the "sea canary." This is because it makes high-pitched squeaks and whistles.

These whales are very important to the Arctic ocean. They live in the cold waters around North America, Russia, and Greenland.

Belugas have many ways to survive in the ice.

They do not have a dorsal fin on their back. This helps them swim easily under thick sheets of ice. Their bodies are covered in a thick layer of fat called blubber. This blubber makes up 40% to 50% of their body weight. It keeps them warm in water that is 0 to 18 degrees Celsius.

They also use a part of their head called a melon. The melon is a large, fatty bump used for echolocation. This is a way to find things using sound. The whale can even change the shape of its melon to help.

Scientists have studied these whales for a long time.

Peter Simon Pallas first described the beluga in 1776. In 1849, workers in Vermont found fossilized beluga bones. These bones were found while building the first railroad between Rutland and Burlington. The bones were in the sediments of the Champlain Sea. This sea was part of the Atlantic Ocean 12,000 years ago. Today, the Charlotte whale is the official Vermont State Fossil.

Belugas come in different sizes and ages.

Adult males can grow up to 5 meters long. They can also weigh up to 1,600 kilograms. Females are usually smaller and lighter than males.

Calves are born grey or blue-grey. They turn white by age seven for females and age nine for males. Researchers found that belugas can live a long time. They can live for 70 or 80 years. Scientists count layers in their teeth to find their age.

These whales are very social animals.

They usually live in groups of about 10 animals. In the summer, they can gather in hundreds or thousands. They move to warmer river estuaries when the ice melts.
