The group has five members: Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, and cousins Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson. They are loved by fans because of their ability to harmonize. This means their different voices blend to create a rich, beautiful sound. They have become one of the best-selling music artists in the entire world.

Making a music career takes many hard steps. The group started by performing in malls and restaurants during the summer of 1993. They even toured schools to meet fans and find people to sign them to a record deal. In 1994, they traveled to Sweden to record songs with producers. This helped them create their first big hit, "We've Got It Goin' On." They later traveled the world in just 100 hours to promote their music. This fast trip included cities like Tokyo, Sydney, and New York City.

The group formed in Orlando, Florida, in 1993. A man named Lou Pearlman helped bring the members together. He held auditions at a large hangar in Kissimmee, Florida. Hundreds of performers tried out for the group. The name "Backstreet Boys" came from the Backstreet Market in Orlando. This was an outdoor market where many teenagers liked to hang out. The group officially celebrates their anniversary on April 20 every year.

Many important dates and numbers mark their success. In 1999, their album Millennium became a massive hit. It sold over 11 million copies in just one year. The song "I Want It That Way" became a famous hit in over 25 countries. The group has sold more than 130 million records worldwide. This makes them the best-selling boy band of all time. They also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013.

Even though they are superstars, the group has faced many challenges. In 1998, Brian Littrell had to have open-heart surgery. The band had to pause their tour so he could get well. Later, Kevin Richardson left the group for a few years. He eventually rejoined his friends in 2012. Today, they still perform in places like Las Vegas. They even released a special version of their Millennium album in 2025.
