They were formed in Manchester in 1990. The group is known for singing pop music and performing energetic dances. Many people love them because they write their own songs. This makes their music feel very special to their fans. They have become the most successful boy band in UK chart history.

Making the music involves many different roles. Gary Barlow is the lead singer and the main songwriter. He writes many of the songs that the group performs. Mark Owen and Robbie Williams provided backing vocals in the early years. Howard Donald and Jason Orange were primarily there to perform dances. The group worked hard by playing in small clubs and schools. They traveled constantly for months to build a large fanbase.

Nigel Martin-Smith wanted to create a new singing group in 1989. He found Gary Barlow and was impressed by his songwriting. Then, a search for singers and dancers began in Manchester. Howard Donald was one of the oldest people to audition. He had to take time off from his job as a vehicle painter. Mark Owen was an 18-year-old bank employee when he joined. Robbie Williams was only 16 years old at the time.

They have sold over 14.4 million albums in the UK alone. In 2011, their Progress Live tour set a record for being the fastest-selling tour in the UK. They have even won eight Brit Awards during their long career.

Take That has stayed important in music for many years. Even when they split up in 1996, fans remained very devoted. The group reunited for a big tour in 2006 called The Ultimate Tour. Robbie Williams rejoined the group in 2010 for the album Progress. This album was the fastest-selling album of the 21st century. They even performed at the London 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony.
