Backfeeding

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Power usually flows in one direction. It goes from power plants to our homes. Backfeeding is when power flows the opposite way. This can be a good thing or a bad thing.

Some people make their own power. They use wind turbines or sun power. This is called photovoltaic systems. Sometimes they make more power than they use. They can send this extra power back to the grid. This is intentional backfeeding. Power companies use a special meter for this. It helps them track the flow.

Backfeeding can also happen by mistake. This is unintentional backfeeding. It can happen with a portable generator. If a person connects it wrong, power flows back. It can go through a transformer. A transformer is a part that moves power. This can be very dangerous for workers.

Workers must be very careful. They must know every power source. They use grounding sets to stay safe. These sets connect wires to the earth. This keeps the wires from being live. Using certain cords to bypass safety is illegal.
