Backfeeding

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Electricity usually flows in one direction. It travels from power plants to our homes. Backfeeding is when power flows the opposite way. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. It happens when power moves against its typical path.

This movement can be planned or it can be a mistake. If it is not handled well, it can be very dangerous. It can hurt people or break the equipment used to move power. We must learn how this reverse flow works.

There are different ways backfeeding happens. Some people use wind turbines to make power. Others use photovoltaic systems, which turn sunlight into electricity. These people might make more power than they need. They can send that extra power back to the grid. This is called intentional backfeeding.

To do this, power companies use a special electrical meter. This device is made for net metering. It tracks the power moving in both directions.

Sometimes, backfeeding happens by accident. This is called unintentional backfeeding. It often happens with a portable generator. A person might connect a generator to a building the wrong way. They should use a transfer switch to stay safe. A transfer switch disconnects the main power line first.

Without this switch, power can flow back over the service line. It can even go through an electrical transformer. This happens because transformers can work in both directions. This can make the lines live even when they should be off.

Backfeeding also happens inside big power plants. These plants usually create power for others. But sometimes they need to use power themselves. They use electricity for pumps and lights. They also use it for HVAC equipment and control tools. This is called a parasitic load.

If the plant makes less power than it uses, backfeeding occurs. Utility companies try to keep this load small. This helps them stay efficient and save energy.

Safety is the most important part of managing power. Workers must know about every possible power source. They use special tools to stay safe while working. One tool is a protective grounding assembly. This connects wires to the earth to keep them safe.

Using certain cords to bypass safety rules is illegal. In the United States, the National Electrical Code forbids this. Engineers also use a reverse-power cutoff relay. This device opens to stop backfeeding if it happens. This keeps the whole grid working correctly.
