An axle is a central shaft used for a wheel or a gear.

On many vehicles, the axle might be fixed to the wheels so they rotate together. In other cases, the wheels rotate around a central hole in the wheel. On a bicycle, this type of axle is often called a spindle.

Axles are a very important part of almost all wheeled vehicles. They help move the vehicle and keep the wheels in the right place.

There are different ways an axle can work. A straight axle is one single, rigid shaft. It connects a wheel on the left to a wheel on the right. This design helps keep wheels steady under heavy stress. Because they are so strong, straight axles are used on trains and large commercial trucks.

Other vehicles use split axles. These are two separate shafts that allow each wheel to move independently. This makes the ride much smoother for passengers. Split axles also let wheels turn at different speeds when a car makes a turn.

Some axles are used to provide power to the wheels. These are called drive axles. In many modern cars, the transmission and the axle are joined into one unit called a transaxle.

In rear-wheel drive vehicles, an engine turns a long driveshaft. This shaft sends force to the drive axle at the back. Some simple vehicles, like go-karts, might only use one shaft to drive a single wheel. Other go-karts use two wheels for driving.

Large trucks often use a special type of axle called a lift axle.

A driver can raise or lower this axle using a button or a mechanical device. Lowering the axle helps the truck carry more weight. It can also help the truck cross a bridge that has weight limits. Lifting the axle helps save fuel and makes the tires last longer. Lift axles have been used since the early 1940s. A company in Sweden called Zetterbergs was one of the early makers. In 1957, a Finnish company called Vanajan Autotehdas invented a liftable tandem drive axle.

Axles must be made of very strong materials to do their jobs. Most are made from SAE grade 41xx or 10xx steel. Chrome-molybdenum steel is a type of 41xx steel. This steel is very good at resisting bending or breaking. Axles also come in two main designs called full-floating and semi-floating. A full-floating axle carries the weight of the vehicle on its outer casing. This means even if the inner shaft breaks, the wheel stays on the vehicle. This helps prevent accidents. Semi-floating axles are often used on smaller trucks and SUVs. In these, the axle shaft must carry both the power and the weight of the vehicle.
