An axle is a central shaft for a wheel or gear.

It helps wheels turn and stay in place. On some vehicles, the axle is fixed to the wheels. This means the axle and wheels turn together. On other vehicles, the wheels turn around the axle.

This is common on bicycles. On a bicycle, the axle is often called a spindle.

Some axles are one solid rod. This connects a wheel on the left to a wheel on the right. These are used on trains and big trucks. They can hold very heavy loads. Other vehicles use split axles. These are two separate shafts. This lets each wheel move on its own. This makes the ride much smoother. It also lets wheels turn at different speeds when a car turns.

A driver can raise or lower this axle. Lowering it helps carry more weight. Lifting it saves fuel and helps tires last longer. Most axles are made of strong steel.
