Austria made several small attempts to expand its trade overseas. These efforts often involved setting up trading posts in far-off lands.

Most of these plans were short-lived. They often ended because of pressure from other nations. Sometimes the Austrian government lacked interest in these projects. Other times, leaders within the empire disagreed on the plans. One major area of influence was Bosnia and Herzegovina. Keeping control of that area was a big reason for entering World War I in 1914.

In 1715, a private group called the Ostend East India Company began.

The Emperor gave the company 6 million guilders to start. It was a very successful business for a few years. By 1720, the company moved 7 million pounds of tea. This was about 41 percent of all tea from Canton. The company held trading rights in Mocha, Surat, and Canton. However, other powerful nations felt threatened by this success. International pressure eventually forced the company to close by 1732.

Later, a man named William Bolts led new trade missions.

In 1778, he formed the Austrian Asiatic Company of Trieste. Bolts sailed to Delagoa Bay in Africa in 1779. He built forts and a trading post there. The post traded in ivory and made a lot of money. Sadly, the area also had malaria, which is a sickness. In 1781, the Portuguese arrived and removed the Austrian colonists. Bolts also tried to settle the Nicobar Islands in 1778. That settlement was abandoned in 1785 after the leader died.

Explorers also traveled to very cold and distant places. In 1873, an expedition sailed toward the North Pole.

Their ship was named the Tegetthoff. It was 125 feet long and had a steam engine. The ship became stuck in thick ice near the Arctic Circle. While drifting, the crew found new islands. They named this archipelago after Emperor Franz Joseph. The crew had to leave the ship in 1774. They used sleds and boats to find safety. A Russian fishing vessel eventually rescued them.

Austria also took part in important global meetings. In 1884, leaders held the Berlin Conference.

This meeting was held to settle rules for Africa. Austria-Hungary was invited because it was a great power. They did not ask for new colonies there. Instead, they gained the right to dock in many ports. In 1878, Baron Gustav von Overbeck bought land in North Borneo. He tried to sell it to the empire as a penal colony. However, there was not enough interest. He eventually sold the land to a British merchant.
