Austria tried to grow its trade in many far lands.

These attempts had many different results.

In 1715, a group called the Ostend East India Company started. They traded a lot of tea. This company was very successful for a few years. However, other big nations felt threatened by them. Because of this pressure, the company closed in 1732.

A man named William Bolts later led a new plan. He went to a place in Africa called Delagoa Bay. He built forts and a trading post there. The post made money from trading ivory. But the port had malaria, which is a sickness. The Portuguese then came and removed the Austrians in 1781.

Other explorers looked for new places. In 1873, a group sailed to the cold Arctic. Their ship, the Tegetthoff, got stuck in thick ice.

The crew found new islands and named them after the Emperor. They eventually reached safety by boat and sled.

Austria also joined a big meeting in 1884. This was the Berlin Conference. It was held to settle rules for Africa. Austria did not ask for new lands there. But they did get rights to use many ports.
