It makes machines that help build computer chips. These machines are called scanners. They use light to print tiny patterns onto silicon wafers. A wafer is a small disk. This process is called photolithography.

The patterns become the electronic circuits inside a chip.

ASML makes very advanced machines. One type uses extreme ultraviolet lithography, or EUV. EUV is a way to make the smallest chips. These machines use a high-energy laser. The laser hits tiny drops of molten tin. This creates a plasma that gives off EUV light. The light bounces off mirrors to make the designs. These patterns are as small as 8 nanometers. That is 1/10,000 the width of a human hair.

These machines are massive. One EUV machine weighs 180 tons. It needs three Boeing 747 planes to move it. ASML has more than 42,000 workers. They come from 143 different countries. The company is very important to the world of technology.
