ASML Holding N.V. is a Dutch multinational corporation that serves as the world's largest supplier for the semiconductor industry.

The company specializes in developing and manufacturing photolithography machines. These machines are essential for producing integrated circuits, which are the tiny electronic brains found in modern technology. ASML is currently Europe's largest technology company. Its market capitalization is approximately $527 billion. This high valuation makes it one of the most valuable firms in the world. The company's headquarters is located in Veldhoven, near Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

To understand how ASML operates, one must look at the process of photolithography. The machines produced by ASML are often called "scanners." The process begins with a silicon wafer. This wafer is covered in a thin film of light-sensitive material known as photoresist.

The scanner uses light to optically image intricate patterns onto this photoresist layer. This procedure is not done just once. It is repeated dozens of times on a single wafer to build complexity. Once the patterns are set, the wafer undergoes further processing to create the actual electronic circuits. This light-based imaging is used in the fabrication of nearly all integrated circuits today.

ASML provides several distinct types of lithography technology. Deep ultraviolet lithography, or DUV, uses ultraviolet light to print the tiny features of a microchip. Another method is immersion lithography. This technique was first proposed by Burn-Jeng Lin in the 1970s. In this process, a water immersion lens is used to improve the imaging. ASML collaborated with TSMC to use this for commercial production in 2004. The most advanced technology is extreme ultraviolet lithography, known as EUV. ASML holds a near-monopoly in the EUV market. These machines are required to manufacture the most advanced and complex chips in existence.

EUV technology works through a very complex and high-energy mechanism. The machines produce light in the 13.5 nm wavelength range. To create this light, a high-energy laser is focused on microscopic droplets of molten tin. This impact creates a plasma, which then emits the necessary EUV light. Because this light is difficult to manage, it is bounced off specialized mirrors, such as those made by Zeiss, onto the silicon wafer. These machines can etch patterns as small as 8 nanometers. This is roughly 1/10,000 the width of a human hair. In 2009, the IMEC research center in Belgium used a prototype to produce functional 22 nm memory cells.

ASML has a long history of growth and intense competition. The company was founded in 1984 as a joint venture between Philips and ASM International. It became a fully independent corporation in 1995. In 1991, ASML released the PAS 5500 lithography system. This platform was extremely successful and helped ASML compete with leaders like Canon and Nikon. By 2002, ASML had become the largest supplier of photolithography systems. The company has also navigated challenges, such as a large drop in sales in 2008. It has also faced issues regarding intellectual property theft by employees. Despite these hurdles, the company has seen massive revenue growth, rising from $13 billion in 2018 to $35 billion in 2024.

The scale of ASML's equipment is truly massive. One of their best-selling EUV products is the TWINSCAN NXE:3600D. This machine can cost up to $200 million. It weighs approximately 180 tons. To move such a machine, it requires three Boeing 747 aircraft for transport. ASML is now developing the next generation of technology called High-NA. This platform increases the numerical aperture, or NA, from 0.33 to 0.55. These new systems cost approximately $370 million each. The first R&D shipments of High-NA systems went to Intel in December 2023, with TSMC receiving them in late 2024.

ASML's role is deeply connected to global politics and the wider economy. Because the company is a vital link in the microchip supply chain, it is subject to government regulations. The Dutch government has placed restrictions on exporting certain advanced equipment to China. These measures align with U.S. restrictions to manage geopolitical concerns and national security. ASML employs more than 42,000 people from 143 different nationalities. It relies on a massive network of nearly 5,000 tier 1 suppliers. This global interconnectedness shows how essential ASML is to the modern world of electronics and computing.
