Intel Corporation is a major American multinational technology company.

It is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. The company specializes in designing, manufacturing, and selling computer components. These components include central processing units (CPUs), which act as the primary processors for computers. Intel also produces graphics processing units (GPUs) and various other hardware. In 2024, Intel was the world's third-largest semiconductor chip manufacturer by revenue. It has maintained a position on the Fortune 500 list since 2007. This list tracks the largest United States corporations based on their total revenue.

To understand Intel, one must understand semiconductors. Semiconductors are materials used to create electronic components like chips. Intel's technology works by building complex circuits on these tiny materials. In its early years, Intel focused on semiconductor memory. Memory chips allow a computer to store data for quick access. One early success was the 1103 chip, a type of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). DRAM uses a specific cell structure to store information efficiently. By 1972, this chip became the best-selling semiconductor memory chip in the world.

Intel's product history is defined by several distinct technological stages. The first major stage was the memory era. From its founding until 1981, the majority of Intel's business came from memory chips like SRAM and DRAM. The second stage began with the invention of the microprocessor. In 1971, Intel created the 4004, the first commercial microprocessor. A microprocessor miniaturizes the central processing unit (CPU). This allows small machines to perform complex calculations that once required massive computers.

The third stage is the modern era of high-performance computing. This includes the Intel Core line of CPUs and the Intel Arc series of GPUs. These products serve both general business needs and the high-end gaming market.

The company was founded on July 18, 1968, in Mountain View, California. Three men were responsible for its start: Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce, and Arthur Rock. Moore was a chemist, and Noyce was a physicist who helped invent the integrated circuit. Arthur Rock was an investor who provided capital. They originally named the company NM Electronics. They rejected the name "Moore Noyce" because it sounded like "more noise." In electronics, noise refers to unwanted interference that can ruin a signal. They chose the name Intel, which stands for Integrated Electronics.

Two years later, the company became public through an initial public offering (IPO). This allowed them to raise $6.8 million for further growth.

Intel's growth was driven by specific historical partnerships and market shifts. In the 1980s, the success of the IBM personal computer changed everything. This success convinced Gordon Moore to shift the company's focus toward microprocessors. This move led to a period of unprecedented growth throughout the 1990s. During this time, Intel formed a powerful partnership with Microsoft. This combination of Intel hardware and Microsoft Windows software was known as "Wintel."

This partnership helped shape the entire personal computer market. To build brand loyalty, Intel launched the "Intel Inside" marketing campaign in 1991. This made the Pentium processor a household name across the globe.

Despite its success, Intel has faced significant challenges and competition. In the early 2000s, demand for high-end microprocessors began to slow down. A competitor named AMD began to take a larger share of the market. AMD competed heavily in the low-end and mid-range processor segments. Intel's dominance was also affected by the controversial NetBurst microarchitecture. The company also faced legal battles regarding its business practices. Intel was involved in litigation regarding intellectual property and anti-competitive tactics. These legal struggles often involved defending its position against other chip makers.

Today, Intel remains a critical part of the global technology ecosystem. It is a key developer of the x86 series of instruction sets. Most personal computers use these instruction sets to understand and execute commands. Intel also operates massive manufacturing and development centers worldwide. These facilities are located in places like Malaysia, Singapore, Israel, China, and Costa Rica.

The company's work connects to many fields, from digital health to mobile computing. Even with increased competition, Intel continues to lead the x86 market by a wide margin in the 2020s.
