It is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, with major operations in Austin, Texas. AMD develops a wide variety of essential computing components. These include central processing units (CPUs), which serve as the primary brains of a computer. They also create graphics processing units (GPUs) for visual tasks. Additionally, the company produces field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), which are specialized chips that can be programmed for different tasks.

AMD serves many different markets. These include personal computers (PCs), gaming consoles, data centers, and embedded systems.

AMD's technology works by providing the logic and processing power for many machines. The company manufactures microprocessors, which handle complex instructions. They also produce chipsets that connect various parts on a motherboard.

AMD also creates system-on-chips (SoCs) and high-performance computer components. For a long time, AMD manufactured its own semiconductor chips. However, the company changed its business model in 2009. After GlobalFoundries was spun off from the company, AMD began to outsource its manufacturing. This means other companies now handle the physical production of their chips. In 2022, AMD expanded its capabilities by acquiring Xilinx. This acquisition allowed AMD to offer a full range of FPGA products.

The company's product lines are diverse and serve different computing needs. Their microprocessors and embedded processors power everything from laptops to large servers.

They also provide graphics processors for workstations and gaming rigs. In the field of high-performance computing, AMD chips are used in massive data centers. Their embedded systems are found in various specialized electronic devices. By offering both proprietary designs and specialized components, AMD supports a vast ecosystem of technology. This variety allows them to compete in both consumer markets and professional industrial sectors.

The history of AMD began on May 1, 1969.

Jerry Sanders founded the company along with seven colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor. These founders were experienced technology professionals. Sanders was an electrical engineer who wanted more flexibility than he had at his previous job. In September 1969, the company moved to a $500,000 headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. This facility was 15,000 square feet and included production capabilities. Early on, AMD focused on producing logic chips. They even guaranteed quality control to United States Military Standards. This helped them build trust with the military and telecommunications industries.

AMD's growth was marked by several key technological shifts. In 1971, the company entered the RAM chip market. By 1975, AMD entered the microprocessor market to compete with Intel. This began a long-standing rivalry between the two companies. A major turning point occurred in 1981 when IBM created its personal computer. IBM required a second source for Intel's x86 microprocessors. This led to a ten-year technology exchange agreement between Intel and AMD. Under this deal, AMD earned the right to manufacture certain Intel chips. This agreement allowed AMD to produce the 8086, 8088, 80186, and 80188 processors for the growing PC market.

Throughout its history, AMD has experienced both great success and difficult challenges. In the early 2000s, the company saw significant growth. This success was driven by its strong position in the PC market and its Athlon and Opteron processors. However, the late 2000s and early 2010s were difficult. AMD struggled to keep pace with Intel in making faster and more powerful processors. The company eventually found success again in the late 2010s. They used a penetration pricing strategy to gain market share. Their Ryzen processors became very competitive because they offered high performance at attractive prices.

The significance of AMD's success can be seen in its financial milestones. In 1971, the company's total annual sales reached $4.6 million. By 1978, fiscal year sales topped $100 million. In 1979, AMD debuted on the New York Stock Exchange. A major modern milestone occurred in 2022. In that year, AMD's market capitalization surpassed Intel's for the first time. This shows how much the company has grown since its founding. Today, AMD remains a leader in the semiconductor industry.
