It is the largest supplier for the semiconductor industry. This industry makes the tiny chips found in almost all electronics. The company is also Europe's largest technology firm. Its value is about $527 billion. This makes it one of the most valuable companies in the world. ASML helps create the brains for our modern digital lives.

ASML makes machines called scanners to build these chips.

The machines use a process called photolithography. First, a silicon wafer is covered in a light-sensitive film called photoresist. The scanner then uses light to print patterns onto this film. This process happens many times on a single wafer. These patterns eventually become the electronic circuits. It is like using a very tiny, light-based printer.

ASML began in 1984 as a joint venture. It was started by two Dutch companies named Philips and ASM International. By 1988, it became an independent company. In 1991, they released a system called PAS 5500. This system was a huge success for them. It helped ASML compete with older leaders like Canon and Nikon. The company eventually became the world's largest supplier of these systems.

Today, ASML makes incredibly advanced machines called EUV scanners. EUV stands for extreme ultraviolet lithography. These machines use a high-energy laser to hit tiny drops of molten tin. This creates a plasma that gives off EUV light. The light bounces off mirrors to print patterns. These patterns can be as small as 8 nanometers. That is 1/10,000 the width of a human hair. One EUV machine can cost up to $200 million.

These machines are truly massive and difficult to move. One EUV machine weighs about 180 tons. You would need three Boeing 747 planes just to transport it. ASML has more than 42,000 employees from 143 different countries. Their headquarters is in Veldhoven, near Eindhoven. They also work with many partners, like the research center IMEC in Belgium. This global teamwork helps them build the world's most complex technology.
