During one time, the Egyptian Empire ruled the city. Leaders sent letters to the Egyptian king. They promised to send bread, beer, and oil.

New groups of people arrived later. The Philistines made Ascalon one of their five main cities. Many different groups ruled the city over many years. It was a busy place for many centuries.

In the Middle Ages, the city was fought over. Crusaders fought big battles there. Later, a leader named Baybars ordered the city walls to be broken. He did this so no one could use the city for war. Today, you can visit the ruins at Ashkelon National Park.
