It sits in a place called the southern Levant. This city has been important for many thousands of years. People have lived there since the very early Stone Age. Archaeologists study the site today at Tel Ashkelon. This name means "Mound of Ascalon." It is now part of a protected national park. The city's location near the sea made it a great place for trade.

The city grew because of its special land.

Long ago, a river flowed from the land to the sea. This river created an underground water source. People used this water to build deep wells. The oldest well found there is from around 1000 BCE. The ground also had sandy ridges called kurkar. These ridges helped shape the area where people built homes. Fertile soil and plenty of water helped the city thrive.

Many different groups ruled the city over time.

In the Bronze Age, the Egyptian Empire controlled the area. Leaders like Yidya sent clay letters to the Egyptian pharaoh. These letters promised to send food like bread and beer. Later, a group called the Sea Peoples arrived. They helped make Ascalon one of five main Philistine cities. The city also faced many wars and changes in leadership.

History shows many famous battles and names.

In 1099, there was the Battle of Ascalon. Later, in 1153, the city faced the Siege of Ascalon. During the Middle Ages, the city was a prize for Crusaders. A leader named Baybars eventually ordered the city walls destroyed in 1270. He did this to stop the city from being used for war. Even so, some buildings like the Shrine of Husayn's Head still stand.

Today, the city is known as Ashkelon in modern Hebrew.
