They lived in five main cities. These cities were Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Ekron, and Gath. This group of cities is called a pentapolis.

Many scholars think they came from the Aegean area. They may have arrived around 1175 BC. They were part of a group called the Sea Peoples.

These people moved into Canaan and mixed with local groups. They kept their own unique culture. This included special pottery.

The Philistines often fought with the people of Israel. Later, big empires began to rule their land. The Assyrian Empire took control of Philistia. Then, the Egyptians ruled for a short time. In 604 BC, a king named Nebuchadnezzar II came. He was from the Babylonian Empire. He destroyed cities like Ashkelon and Ekron. Many Philistines were killed or sent away. They lost their own identity over time. By the late 5th century BC, they were no longer a separate group.
