Armistice Day is a special day for many people around the world. It marks the moment when fighting stopped in World War I. This event happened on November 11, 1918. People often call it the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. An armistice is an agreement to stop fighting. It was signed in a place called Compiègne, France.

This day is important because it reminds us of the end of a hard time. It helps us think about peace and the people who were part of the war.

The peace began at 5:45 am on that November morning. The fighting officially stopped at 11:00 am. However, some fighting continued until nightfall that day. The armistice was only meant to last for a short time. It expired after 36 days and had to be extended several times. A final peace agreement was not signed until the Treaty of Versailles was signed the next year.

This shows how long it took to truly end the war.

People began holding celebrations to honor this moment in 1919. The first celebration took place at Buckingham Palace in London. King George V hosted a banquet for the President of the French Republic, Raymond Poincaré. The next morning, official events were held on the palace grounds. These events included a two-minute silence. This silence was a way to show respect for those who died.

This tradition of being quiet helped people remember the past.

Different countries have different names for this day now. In the United States, it is called Veterans Day. This name was changed in 1954 to honor all veterans. In the United Kingdom, it is often called Remembrance Sunday. Many other lands use the name Remembrance Day. In Poland, November 11 is National Independence Day. It celebrates when Poland became a free country again in 1918.

Each country has its own way to remember.

Many cultures use special symbols to show they are remembering. In Serbia, people wear a flower called Natalie's ramonda. In Romania, people use the Romanian peony to honor soldiers. In Kenya, ceremonies happen on a different weekend. This is because news of the peace took two weeks to reach them. On the 100th anniversary in 2018, leaders met at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
