In 1541, a Spanish explorer named Hernando de Soto marched through the mountains. Later, French explorers like Jacques Marquette arrived in 1673. Henri de Tonti helped start the first European settlement in 1686. This was called Arkansas Post. Arkansas was once part of French Louisiana. It became a territory in 1819 and joined the Union as the 25th state on June 15, 1836.

The state has seen many changes over the years. During the American Civil War, Arkansas joined the Confederate States in 1861. After the war, the state struggled because it relied heavily on cotton plantations.
