An apiary is a special place where people keep beehives.

These locations are often called bee yards. People use apiaries to collect honey and to help with pollination. Pollination is when bees help plants grow. People all over the world use bees for these important jobs. Beekeepers who look after these places are called apiarists.

The word apiary comes from the Latin word "apis," which means bee. This word eventually became "apiarium," or a beehouse.

Setting up an apiary requires careful planning. Beekeepers look for high ground to keep the hives away from moisture. The bees also need to be near a steady water source. Most apiaries are placed near orchards, farms, or public gardens. This helps the bees find nectar and pollen easily. In the Northern Hemisphere, keepers prefer spots with morning sun. If the weather is very hot, they might provide shade for the bees.

Apiaries can look very different depending on where they are. In cities, hives are often kept on high ground to save space. Beekeepers in cities might build tall fences. These fences guide the bees to fly higher. This helps the bees search for food in a wider area. In the United States, beekeepers work in every single state. Some people do this as a hobby, while others do it for work. Large honey production happens in places like Florida, Texas, and California.

History shows that humans have worked with bees for a very long time.

In ancient Egypt, people built hives using moulded mud. This was done before the year 2422 BCE. Today, honey production is a huge global business. China, Germany, and Mexico are among the largest exporters of honey. In the U.S., about 16% of honey is brought in from other countries. Different groups use apiaries for different reasons. Some are for making honey, while others are for research or teaching.

The size of an apiary is a very important detail. Size can mean the amount of space used or the number of bee families. A larger apiary can often produce more honey. However, having too many hives can cause problems. If there are too many bees, they might compete for food. This can lead to less honey or more diseases. Some bees might even try to rob other hives for resources. Because of this, many keepers choose to keep their apiaries small. This helps protect the bees from sickness and keeps them healthy.
