People have kept bees for a very long time. In ancient Egypt, hives were made of mud. The word apiary comes from a Latin word for bee.

People who tend these hives are called apiarists.

Apiaries can be in the country or in cities.

In cities, hives often sit on high ground. Beekeepers may build tall fences. These fences make bees fly higher to find food. Most apiaries sit near farms or gardens. This helps bees find nectar. It also helps plants through pollination. Bees need sun and water to stay healthy. In hot places, beekeepers must provide shade.

Size is also important. Some apiaries have many bee families. Large apiaries can make more honey. But if there are too many hives, bees might fight for food. They may also spread diseases to each other. Because of this, some beekeepers keep their apiaries small. This helps keep the bees safe and healthy.
