Honey bees are the most famous makers of this treat. Bees create honey to nourish their entire colony. It provides the energy they need to fly and work. It also serves as food for their young larvae. Storing honey helps the bees survive during lean times or cold winters.

Making honey is a very busy job for a bee. A foraging bee uses its proboscis to suck up nectar from flowers. This liquid goes into a special honey stomach. One honey bee might visit over one thousand flowers to fill it.

Once the bee returns to the hive, it passes the nectar to other bees. These hive bees regurgitate the liquid to break down the sugars. They also flap their wings to move air through the hive. This helps the water evaporate until the nectar becomes thick honey.

In the New World, the Mayans practiced meliponiculture. This is the special name for raising stingless bees. Today, people use apiculture to keep honey bees in hives. This helps us collect honey for our own food. We can find honey in stores all around the world.

There are many interesting facts about how honey works. Honey is very sweet because it has lots of fructose and glucose.

It has a similar sweetness to the table sugar we use at home. Because it has very little water, honey does not spoil easily. Many tiny germs cannot grow in it. This means honey can last for thousands of years if it is stored well. Some honey found in old sites is still edible today.

Beekeeping is a way to work alongside these amazing insects. Beekeepers often use a smoker to keep the bees calm.

They can collect honey by crushing honeycomb or using a machine called an extractor.

Modern beekeepers are very careful to look after their bees. They make sure the colonies have enough food to survive the winter. This might mean giving them sugar water to eat. This helps keep the bees healthy and happy in their hives.
