In some places, people use the word unit to describe them. Some buildings are mixed-use, meaning they have shops on the bottom floors and homes above. This allows people to live right where they shop or work.

There are many ways to live in an apartment. Some people rent their homes from a private landlord.

Others own their specific unit through a condominium, which is also called a condo. In a condominium, residents own their space but share the cost of public areas. Some people live in a housing cooperative, or co-op. In a co-op, the residents own shares in a company that owns the whole building.

This means they own a piece of the entire development rather than just one unit.

Apartments come in many different sizes and shapes. A studio apartment is a very small, single-room home.

This one room acts as a bedroom, living room, and dining area all at once. In Korea, people call these "one rooms." Some apartments are located in the attic and are called garret apartments. These often have sloping walls because they are under the roof.

Other homes, like garden apartments, are low-rise buildings built around green lawns or courtyards.

Buildings can be very short or very tall. High-rise buildings are tall structures that often contain many residences.

These towers became possible because of the invention of the elevator. Most high-rise buildings use steel and reinforced concrete to stay strong. Some buildings are called skyscrapers if they have fifty or more stories. Low-rise buildings have fewer floors and often do not have elevators. Many of these are called walk-ups because you must use the stairs.

Different cultures have their own special words for these homes. In Japan, the word mansion is used for high-end apartments.

In Scotland, a traditional sandstone building might be called a tenement.

In Malaysia, a dingbat usually refers to a five-story building without a lift. Understanding these names helps us see how people around the world create spaces to live together. Every building tells a story about the city around it.
