A condominium is a special way to own property. Many people call them "condos" for short.

It is not just about the building itself. Instead, it is about the legal way people own it. In a condo, a building is divided into many separate units. Each person owns their own unit. However, they also share the common areas. These areas include things like hallways, roofs, and elevators.

Owners also share amenities like pools or gyms.

How does this ownership work in real life? It works through a system of shared and private space. An owner usually owns the air space inside their unit. This space is defined by a legal document called a Declaration.

Inside their walls, owners can often make changes. But everything outside those walls is owned by a group. This group is often a corporation. This corporation holds the shared property in trust for all the owners. This helps keep the building running smoothly for everyone.

This way of sharing has a long history. The word "condominium" comes from Latin. It combines "con," meaning together, and "dominium," meaning ownership. This means "joint ownership."

Long ago, the term was used for lands shared by two powers. For example, the Oregon Country was a condominium. From 1818 to 1846, the United States and Great Britain shared it. Later, the Oregon Treaty split the land at the 49th parallel. This gave each country its own side to rule.

To keep things organized, owners form a group. This is often called a homeowners association or HOA.

This group has a board of directors. The board makes decisions and manages the building. They use a set of rules called bylaws. These rules might say if you can have pets. They might also set rules for the color of your door. Owners pay fees to the association to pay for repairs. This money keeps the shared parts of the building in good shape.

Condos are found in many different places around the world. In Canada, the first condo development was Brentwood Village. This was registered in 1967 in Edmonton, Alberta.

In Australia, people call these "strata title schemes." In Denmark, they are called "owner-apartments." Condos are not just for homes, either. Businesses use them for offices, shops, and even hotels. This system helps many people live or work together in one large complex.
