It is an archipelago, which means it is a group of many islands. The two main islands are Antigua and Barbuda, but there are many other small ones too. You might see Guiana Island or Long Island near the coast. Far to the southwest sits a rocky, empty island called Redonda. The country is small, with a total area of 440 square kilometers. It sits between the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Caribbean Sea on the west.

The coastlines are very wiggly and full of beaches and lagoons. You can find many reefs and shoals in the water all around the islands. Because it does not rain very often, there are not many streams. The weather is tropical and can feel quite dry. The hottest times are in the summer and autumn.

People have lived on these islands for thousands of years. Very long ago, hunter-gatherers arrived around 3000 BC. They likely traveled to the islands in canoes from Central or South America. Later, the Arawak people arrived and brought farming with them. They grew tasty things like corn, sweet potatoes, and even pineapple.
