He helped the islands of Antigua and Barbuda become independent. He was a very tall man. He stood 7 feet tall. Bird grew up in a poor area of St. John's. This is the capital city of Antigua. He did not go to a large university. He only attended primary school at St. John's Boys School. This school is now called the T.N. Kirnon Primary School. He worked hard to change things for his people.

Bird started his career in a unique way. He served as an officer in the Salvation Army for two years. He left that job because he saw something unfair. He saw how landowners treated the local black Antiguans and Barbudans. This made him want to fight for freedom. He joined a group called the Antigua Trades and Labour Union. He became its president in 1943. He used this role to fight for better pay. He also fought for workers to have annual holidays with pay.

His political journey had many different steps. In 1945, he was elected to the colonial legislature. This was the first time he gained big political fame. He formed the Antigua Labour Party to help his cause. In 1951, his party won every single seat in the legislature. He held many titles over many years. He was the first Chief Minister in 1960. He was also the first and only Premier. Finally, he became the first Prime Minister in 1981.

There were many important dates in his long life.
