Eric went to study history at Oxford University in England. He won a special scholarship to go there in 1932. He worked very hard and finished his degree in 1935. He even ranked first among all the history graduates that year. In 1938, he earned his doctorate, which is a very high degree. During his time at Oxford, he faced hard times with racial discrimination. He also traveled to Germany after the Nazis took power there.

Eric became a famous historian because of his research. In 1944, he published a book called "Capitalism and Slavery." He argued that the end of slavery was linked to money and trade. He believed that the British economy was changing in ways that made slavery less profitable. This was a new way to look at history. His ideas were influenced by another writer named C. L. R. James.
