The highest point is Crocus Hill, which is near the capital, The Valley.

The island's environment is shaped by its tropical climate. Trade winds keep the air relatively cool and dry most of the time. The average temperature stays around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. July through October is the hottest period for the island. December to February is the coolest time of the year.

However, the weather can sometimes bring big storms. These are called hurricanes and usually happen between July and November. In 2017, Hurricane Irma hit the island. It was the most powerful hurricane to ever reach Anguilla. The island also faced damage from Hurricane Luis in 1995 and Hurricane Lenny in 1999.

People have lived on Anguilla for a very long time. The first settlers were Indigenous American peoples who came from South America. Archaeologists found artifacts from around 1300 BC. There are also rock carvings called petroglyphs at Big Spring and Fountain Cavern.

Later, Europeans arrived on the island. Some say Christopher Columbus saw it in 1493. Others believe a Frenchman named René Goulaine de Laudonnière arrived in 1564. The Dutch West India Company built a fort there in 1631. English settlers began to live there more permanently around 1650. They grew crops like tobacco and cotton on large farms.

The history of the island includes many changes in who was in charge. In the 1600s, the French and English fought for control. During this time, many enslaved people were brought from West and Central Africa. They were forced to work on sugar plantations. Slavery was eventually outlawed in the British Empire in 1834. Later, Anguillans fought to be separate from Saint Kitts and Nevis. This period was called the Anguillan Revolution.
