Most of these islands sit on a flat underwater area called the Puerto Rico Bank. They are part of a larger group called the Leeward Islands. This group is found in the West Indies region of the Caribbean. The islands are divided into three different political areas.

Each group of islands follows different rules. The eastern part is the British Virgin Islands. These belong to the United Kingdom. The middle part is the U.S. Virgin Islands. These belong to the United States. The western islands are called the Spanish Virgin Islands. They are part of Puerto Rico.

In the British and U.S. areas, cars drive on the left side of the road. In the Spanish islands, drivers stay on the right side. This is a big difference for travelers.

Many people lived on these islands a long time ago. The Arawak and Carib people were the first inhabitants. Later, people from Europe came to settle there. They started farms for sugar and tobacco. These settlers also brought enslaved people from Africa. Sadly, many of the original people died during this time. This happened because of war, foreign diseases, and enslavement. Today, most people have African-Caribbean roots. This history shaped the culture of the islands.

There are many interesting facts about these islands. The total population is 147,778 people. The U.S. Virgin Islands has the most people with 104,901. St. Thomas is the largest island in that group. St. Croix is also very crowded with 50,601 people. The British islands have 31,758 people. The Spanish islands have 11,119 people.

History shows that many nations have ruled these islands. Spain once held many of them. The islands also belonged to the Dutch and the French. Denmark once ruled the Danish West Indies. The United States bought these islands from Denmark in 1917. The price was 25 million dollars in gold.

Christopher Columbus gave the islands their name. He named them after Saint Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins. This is how they became known as the Virgin Islands.
