The Spanish Virgin Islands are a special pair of islands. They are named Vieques and Culebra. These islands sit in the northeastern Caribbean Sea. They are located between Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Geologically, they sit on a platform called the Puerto Rico Bank. This platform is between the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Most of the islands in this area sit on the same tectonic plate. This plate is called the Puerto Rico–Virgin Islands microplate. Because they are part of Puerto Rico, they are also called the Puerto Rican Virgin Islands.

These islands have a very long history. Indigenous groups lived on Vieques 1,500 years before Columbus arrived in 1493. The Taíno and Carib people also lived on Culebra.

During the 1600s and 1700s, many different countries wanted the islands. The Dutch, French, English, and Danish all tried to control them. The English tried to settle Vieques twice. They even built a fort and a government there. However, the Spanish governor from Puerto Rico sent soldiers to move them out. Spain kept control of these islands until the Spanish-American War in 1898.

Changes happened quickly after the war ended. The United States took possession of the islands in September 1898. Later that year, a treaty was signed in Paris. This treaty officially gave the islands to the United States. In 1903, the U.S. government took land on Culebra for the Navy. They moved the people living in the town of San Ildefonso de la Culebra. The people moved to a small area called Dewey.

This was a very difficult time for the local residents.

The military used the islands for a long time. In 1941, laws were passed to help build a base on Vieques. The U.S. Navy used Vieques as a place for bombing and artillery practice. They used the island for these drills until 2003. Today, much of the land is used for nature instead. Much of Vieques is now the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. The small islet of Culebrita is part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge. These areas help protect the land and the animals.

The islands are beautiful places to see. Culebra has an irregular shape with a complex coastline. You can find high cliffs and sandy beaches there. There are also mangroves, which are plants that grow in salty water.

The highest point on Culebra is Mount Resaca. The islands also have many calm pools of water. These are called lagoons and bays. Some famous ones include Laguna Flamenco and Ensenada Honda. Many small islets sit near the shores of the main islands too.
