A writer named Sophocles wrote it long ago. It was first performed in Athens around 440 BC. The story takes place in a city called Thebes.

The play is about a girl named Antigone. Her brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, died in a war. The new king, Creon, makes a strict rule. He says Eteocles should be honored. But he says Polynices must stay unburied. This is a very harsh punishment.

Antigone wants to follow the laws of the gods. She wants to bury her brother. She breaks the king's law to do it. Her sister, Ismene, is too afraid to help. Antigone is caught and punished by Creon. He decides to lock her in a cave.

Many people try to help. Creon's son, Haemon, tries to talk to his father. A blind prophet named Tiresias warns the king. Tiresias says the gods are angry. Creon tries to fix his mistake, but it is too late. Many people in the royal family die because of these choices. The play shows the heavy cost of being too proud.
