Animal training

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Animal training is the way people teach animals to react to specific signals. This can be done for many different reasons. Some animals are trained to be companions or service animals. Others are trained for protection, work, or even entertainment.

A seeing eye dog has a very different job than a wild animal in a circus. Training can also include helping animals with their health or research.

Trainers must think about how an animal naturally acts. They aim to change behaviors using a system of rewards and punishments.

There are four main ways a trainer can change behavior. Positive reinforcement happens when a reward follows a behavior. This makes the animal want to do it again. Negative reinforcement is when an uncomfortable thing is removed after a behavior. This also makes the behavior happen more often.

Positive punishment adds an unpleasant stimulus to stop a behavior. Negative punishment removes a stimulus to decrease a behavior. Behavior analysts often suggest using positive reinforcement to grow good habits. If you use punishment, the animal must also learn a better way to act.

Trainers use special schedules to help animals learn. A fixed ratio schedule gives a reward after a set number of actions. A variable ratio schedule gives rewards after a changing number of actions.

While fixed schedules help at the start, variable schedules work best for long-term learning. Trainers also use a process called shaping. This means rewarding small steps until the animal learns the whole task. They might use a clicker to bridge the time between the action and the reward. This sound helps the animal know exactly when they did something right.

Training has a long and interesting history. In China, people have trained cormorants to catch fish for over 1,200 years.

In the United States, some prisons use programs where inmates train service dogs. This helps both the animals and the people in the prison. In 1939, the Hollywood office created the Patsy Awards. These awards recognize animal stars in films and television. One trainer, Frank Inn, even won over 40 of these awards.

Even insects are sometimes used by specialized trainers like Steven R. Kutcher.

Many different animals can be trained in unique ways. Horses are often trained to be safe around humans. They can even compete in the Olympic games as athletes.

Elephants are very smart and can recognize more than 20 words. They can also learn to remember melodies and tones.

Even chickens can be trained to navigate obstacle courses.

Some trainers even use chickens to practice new teaching methods. Whether it is a dog, a bird, or a horse, training helps animals connect with the world around them.
