Trainers can teach animals to help people. Some animals act as service animals. They help people with disabilities in daily life.

Other animals are trained for sports or for shows.

Trainers use a set of steps to teach. They use rewards to make good behaviors happen more often. This is called positive reinforcement. A reward could be food or a pat.

Trainers also use clickers. A clicker is a small tool that makes a sound. It helps the animal know they did a good job. Timing is very important. The reward must come right after the act. This helps the animal link the act to the prize.

Some animals learn many things. An elephant can learn more than 20 words. They can even learn to recognize a melody.
