André Derain was a famous French artist. He was a painter and a sculptor. He helped start a style called Fauvism. This style used very bright and bold colors.

One critic called his group "the wild beasts." This name came from their use of unnatural colors.

In 1906, Derain went to London. He made 30 paintings of the city. He painted the River Thames and Tower Bridge.

He used a way called Divisionism. This means he used dots of color. These dots helped show sunlight on moving water. Later, his art changed. He used more quiet colors. He studied old masters to learn new ways. After World War I, he led a new style. This was called the Return to Order. He also made beautiful designs for ballet shows. Many people around the world still love his work today.
