André Derain was a famous French artist. He worked as a painter and a sculptor. He helped start a new style called Fauvism. This style used very bright and bold colors.

In 1905, he worked with Henri Matisse in Collioure. Their paintings were so colorful that a critic called them "les Fauves." This means "the wild beasts." This name helped start the Fauvist movement. People still study these bright works today.

Derain had many ways of painting. In 1906, he went to London to paint the city. He made 30 paintings of places like Tower Bridge.

He used a method called Divisionism. This means he used separate dots of color. These dots helped show sunlight on moving water. His work looked very fresh and different. It was not like older paintings of London. This style made his London work very popular.

His life changed many times. He was born in 1880 in Chatou, France. He first studied to be an engineer. Later, Matisse helped him become a full-time painter.

In 1907, a dealer named Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler bought his studio. This gave Derain money to keep working. He moved to Montmartre to be near other artists. He even lived near Pablo Picasso for a time.

As time passed, his art changed again. He studied the "old masters" and the artist Paul Cézanne. His colors became more quiet and simple.

After World War I, he led a style called the Return to Order. This style focused more on tradition. He also made designs for the Ballets Russes in 1919. He won the Carnegie Prize in 1928 for his art.

Today, many museums hold his beautiful works. You can see them in New York and London.

Some paintings were even returned to families after they were taken during the war. For example, a court returned his work in 2020. In 2023, another painting was returned to the family of Dane Reichsmann. His art shows us how styles can change. It connects the wild colors of the past to new traditions.
