He believed that the types of fat in our diet could help prevent heart disease. Today, many health groups around the world use his ideas to give people advice on eating well. His work helped change how we think about nutrition and staying healthy.

Keys used many different ways to study the human body. First, he studied how fish use their gills to manage salt in their bodies. Later, he led a team into the Andes mountains to see how high altitudes affect blood pressure. He found that the body can adapt to new environments in predictable ways. He also created a special tool to measure nitrogen in biological samples more quickly. This tool helped scientists study everything from grasshopper eggs to human health.

Keys had a very busy life of learning and discovery. He was born in Colorado Springs on January 26, 1904. He grew up in Berkeley, California, after his family moved there following a big earthquake. He was a very bright student and even worked many odd jobs as a young man. He studied many subjects like chemistry, economics, and zoology at the University of California, Berkeley. He eventually earned two different Ph.D. degrees in oceanography and physiology.

During World War II, Keys helped the Army create K-rations. These were special, portable meals designed for soldiers in the field. The rations were small enough to fit in a pocket but very powerful. Each box provided 3,200 calories of energy every day to keep soldiers going.

In 1944, he also led the Minnesota Starvation Experiment. He studied 36 men to see how the body reacts to not having enough food. This study resulted in a large book called The Biology of Human Starvation, published in 1950.

One of his biggest projects was called the Seven Countries Study. He looked at how people in different parts of the world ate and stayed healthy. He noticed that people in Crete lived very long lives. He found that eating fats from vegetables was better for the heart than fats from meat and milk. This led to the popularity of the Mediterranean diet. He also helped promote the Body Mass Index, or BMI, to help measure body weight. His discoveries still help doctors and families make healthy choices today.
